Readings
The previous post, "Why," is for me. You may read it if you like, or may pass on it if you wish. It is a reminder to myself of many things:
2 sleepless nights under a streetlight
Hope
Sadness
Lonliness
Longing
Comfort
Faith
Growing up
Letting go
The excerpts are from the book, "The River Why," By David James Duncan. It is a book which perpetually elicits my own introspection. It is the only book that I continue to reread yearly and my copy is so well worn and loved that upon this most recent reading it split clean in two (actually it is now in four pieces as it has jettisoned several sections upon previous reads). I offer it's title as a marker for reference and not of universal reverence. This book means something special to me. It stands as a proven pattern. And given the right gauge, presentation and season this pattern will draw nibbles of curiosity from a quarter-aged and uniquely water-bourne creature of my shape and size.
It may be because I don't fully understand my attraction to this lure that it has continued. Maybe like Gus I am just attracted to big clean waters and it is with that which I can identify. Or maybe I just continue to search for my Eddy and my Titus; with a tinge of jealousy everytime Gus finds his, I hold onto the hope that mine too are out there, their status as partner and mentor yet to be confirmed. It is likely that it is a bit of them all,
and with that knowledge I will continue to strike hard year after year.
